  คำอุทาน (interjection) 

       คำอุทาน ( interjection) คือ คำที่แสดงอารมณ์ความรู้สึกหลากหลาย มักใช้ในภาษาพูด ถ้าเป็นการเขียนส่วนใหญ่มักมีเครื่องหมายอัศเจรีย์ (!) กำกับอยู่ด้วย อาจเป็นคำเพียงคำเดียวหรือสองคำที่อุทานออกมา หรืออาจขึ้นต้นประโยคก็ได้   แม้ว่าจะตัดคำอุทานออกไป ประโยคนั้นก็ยังคงเป็นประโยคที่สมบูรณ์ เนื่องจากคำอุทานนี้ไม่มีส่วนสัมพันธ์ทางด้านไวยากรณ์กับส่วนที่เหลือของ ประโยคซึ่งเป็นสิ่งที่แตกต่างจากคำประเภทอื่น ๆ  ต่อไปนี้เป็นคำอุทานบางคำ พร้อมทั้งความหมายและตัวอย่าง

eh	asking for repetition	"It's hot today." "Eh?" "I said it's hot today."
expressing enquiry	"What do you think of that, eh?"

inviting agreement	"Let's go, eh?"
er	expressing hesitation	"Lima is the capital of...er...Peru."
hello, hullo	expressing greeting	"Hello John. How are you today?"
